About

I am one of the principals of Blue Ocean Ideas along with my partner Brody Bond. Together we are building one of the fastest growing creative agencies in the Baltimore, Blue Ocean Ideas.

This blog is about the intersection of leadership, ideas, design and life. These topics are important to me as I have based my career around them and that bleeds into everything in my life.

I post roughly 3 times a week. Sometimes more; sometimes less.

Biography

I began my professional career at Erickson Retirement Communities (then Senior Campus Living) where I was eventually the controller. I lead a large department that was diverse and talented. I learned how valuable leadership is.

Erickson was a young business at the time and I had a tremendous opportunity to be an entrepreneur within a large organization. I loved every minute of innovating, establishing systems and moving things forward.

I also learned that in a larger corporate environment it can be very difficult to change and grow at a pace needed in todays world.

I spent the late 1990′s and early 2000′s as the Director of Finance for a startup development company that was creating retirement living communities in Chicago. While we were successful in funding the venture and acquiring property we were unable to get projects off the ground.

I learned in Chicago just how many things needed to be executed well in order to succeed in a startup.

At the same time I formed a residential building company. I spent 10 years developing The Kanon Group to provide middle market homeowners with high quality renovations and additions in the greater Baltimore area.

I learned from Kanon how important developing employees, caring for customers, and building a brand really is.

I have spent my career learning and continuing to grow. I am certified in the DISC Analysis, The Harrison Assessment, Emyth Mastery Impact, and I passed the Certified Public Accountant exam in 1994.

I am a husband of one wife and father of four children. Elise and I have been married for 20 years. Our children range in age from eighteen down to 8.

In the time that I’m not working or enjoying my family you can find me almost anywhere outside under the sun, moon or stars. I like to run, swim, play touch football, play ultimate frisbee, snowboard, backpack and anything around water. I also love to read and write.

While these are things I have done with my life. The single most important thing that defines me is this:

I am a friend of Jesus. That’s who I really am.
